MURRINDINDI Shire Council was recently contacted about the council officer comment last August about their intention to develop plans in the next 12 months regarding dog play areas, including on leash and off leash, as well as dog free areas, as part of council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan.

They responded, “Council has been exploring ways to enhance our local parks and provide off-leash areas for dogs.

This decision isn’t straightforward, it involves careful consideration and investment from council.

“We want to make sure that any changes are based on evidence and community need and that our efforts are focused in the right areas.

Our focus is on ensuring a safe environment for dog owners, as well as the broader community.

“In creating dog off-leash areas, we are considering the requirements of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 and how off-leash areas can be cost-effectively and practically implemented, monitored, enforced and sustainably maintained That’s where our Community Local Law and related policies come into play as well.

“Investment in dog off leash areas will be considered as part of Council’s Annual Budget process for 2025/26 and we’ll be reaching out to the community to discuss any proposed changes once we’ve completed a thorough assessment of the options, requirements and costs associated.
