THE Queen Alexandra statue, also known as the Princess Alexandra statue, in Alexandra’s Jack Shiel Gardens has been restored after extensive work that involved the sculpting of a new marble head by a stone mason with the expertise in the style of the original.

The statue’s head was removed in an act of vandalism earlier this year and following an extensive search the repairs were conducted with assistance and guidance from an experienced conservator.

The statue is on permanent loan to Alexandra from the National Gallery.

It was created by English sculptor Charles Summers.

The Princess Alexandra Statue is made of white Italian marble, and was completed in Rome as part of a commission for Sir William J. Clarke in 1876.

Sir William commissioned Charles Summers to sculpt four large statues in marble of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and the then Prince and Princess of Wales (later Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) for presentation to the Melbourne art gallery.
