THIS Sunday, September 8, will see the fourth annual Suicide Awareness Walk commence at the Yea Railway Park.

People attend from far and wide, including many from beyond the shire, and are registering to walk at 8.30am or have already registered online.

Founder of the walk, Jacky Gilbee said the walk “is a great opportunity that only occurs once a year in Yea for anyone touched by suicide or who would like to support others, to come together in solidarity.”

After registration, Rotary emcee David Anderson will open the morning, introducing Taungurung elder Aunty Angela, and guest speakers Steven Neffs from We Listen (Shepparton) and Nigel Lyttle (principal of Alexandra Secondary College).

The morning continues with an honour role of people being remembered on the day by walkers read out by Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish, and then attendees set out on the walk along the rail trail, assembling at a huge banner on the twin bridges alongside the Melba Highway for a photo, before returning to a barbecue lunch provided by Yea Rotary.

This event is completely free and as Jacky says, “Everyone is welcome, including four legged friends that are so important to keeping us comforted and cared for after loss.

We aim to provide a morning that is supportive, not sad, with our local music man David Deans Draper providing some uplifting tunes behind the lunchtime chatter.”
