ON Saturday, May 25, Murrindindi Shire Council hosted the 2024 Community Awards presentation night.

Community Awards were presented in four categories, Volunteer of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year, Senior Volunteer of the Year and Community Group or Initiative of the Year.

Mayor Damien Gallagher emceed the evening and presented the awards. Mayor Gallagher spoke about the many forms of volunteering in Murrindindi in 2024.

These include emergency services, disaster relief and recovery, animal welfare, local events, faith and religion, sporting clubs, environment, and so much more.

Mayor Gallagher thanked Taungurung Elder, Aunty Angela van Buuren and Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish for being in attendance, as well as last year’s volunteer awards recipients Bob Emblin, Alistair Gerrey, Kirk Mecuri and Sarah Southam.

Mayor Gallagher also thanks councillors, shire CEO Livia Bonazzi, and Natalie and her team for the night’s events.

Member for Indi Helen Haines was unable to attend but provided a message to the volunteers, which was to “take a moment and bask in the praise for your tireless work and the celebrations for you.”

Council received 39 nominations for the awards this year. Mayor Gallagher thanked the selection panel for their hard work to get the results for the night. Mayor Gallagher said, “Everyone is a winner and needs to be celebrated.”

The Young Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Alexis Holder. Alexis has volunteered at CWA cake stalls and help deliver promotional material for Kinglake Neighbourhood House.

She’s also a part of Kinglake West CFA and the Kinglake Boomerang Bags project.

Alexis is currently doing her VCE and she also works outside of school hours.

Alexis still finds time to volunteer as she has a passion to help people.

Alexis has the long term goal of becoming an engineer.

The Senior Volunteer of the year award went to Julie Lynch, who was unable to join at the awards night.
