THE Alexandra Lions Club is teetering on the brink. They are in desperate need of new members, and if they are not found then the club is likely to close within weeks or merge with the Eildon club, which is also in need of new members.

The vote to dissolve the club has been conducted, however this can be rescinded if more members join.

They are particularly keen on having younger members join as the average age of current members is over 70.

At a public meeting at the Alexandra RSL Hall on the evening of Wednesday, February 19, officeholders, members and special guests spoke about the value of the organisation and the huge amount of money that they have raised for the community.

John Beale said that the club provides both social and learning opportunities, and costs just $50 per year to join.

Since the Alexandra Lions Club started on August 22, 1972, $750,000 has been raised and distributed by the club, a wonderful effort.

70 per cent of this has gone to the local community, and 30 per cent to support for people in disasters, such as fire and floods.

Their funds have helped organisations including Alexandra Secondary College, Alexandra and District Traders and Tourism, Alexandra Kindergarten, Kellock Lodge, the Alexandra Football Netball Club, CFA, SES, UGFM, Alexandra District Health and a variety of other local groups. They have also provided support for Dolly’s Dream, Kid Dogs, cancer research, prostate research and eye health.

They collect pairs of glasses for distribution in low income countries and support Heartwalkers for children, and of course sell Christmas cakes.
