The remarkable story behind the newer section of the Alexandra Library

THE Alexandra Library is a well-loved institution in the town. It incorporates a historical building with a newer one, providing a range of interior spaces and services.

The story of how the newer building came into existence is an interesting one. John Sharwood, one of the instigators of council purchasing the land for the new building, explained the story of how the library changed for the better.

The area between the old library and UT Creek, on Grant Street, was a plant nursery for many years.

John explained that he and wife Pam “had an affliction for going to nurseries because we’re both interested in gardens. We used to go there quite often and Pam would buy some plants.”

After the nursery closed, the site became a machinery hire business. When that too closed, “a for sale notice went on it for the land,” John said. He guessed that this occurred around the year 2000.

“When going into town, Pam and I, but particularly Pam, would say ‘It’s such a wonderful site. That would be a wonderful sport for the library to have more space. If somebody buys it, they could put a retail premises there or do something, and the library could never extend. The library is the absolute heart of the town, where …
