ROUND one of the outer Eastern division two women’s football kicked off this week with Thornton heading over the Great Divide to take on Seville on their home ground. The team this season would see many returning players complimented by some exceptional recruiting by the coaching staff.
After a short but energised pre-season, the Thornton players were eager to shake off the nerves to see where their hard work would take them this season. It was evident from the first bounce that the result would be remarkably different from the corresponding 120 thrashing from the season before.
Captain Rose Kealy won the first tap to a determined Tahnee Heard for the first possession and clearance of the season. Tahnee then followed up her hard work up forward and from a stoppage was able to snap the first goal of the season. In a fierce first quarter Thornton went into the break with a slim two point lead.
The contest in the second quarter followed a similar trend to the first with Thornton’s midfield dominating around the ground. Recruits, Jamee Cousens and Jade Mewburn found plenty of the ball and gave Thornton’s forwards numerous opportunities to score. Lucy McRae, on her return to football after having her first child, roved her own ruck works and snapped truly to put Thornton eight points up at half time.
The third quarter saw much of the same dominance that Thornton showed in the first half and they continued to keep the scorers on their toes. Trinity Tebbutt opened her account and snapped truly while Maya Fuller followed soon after with a goal of her own.
At Three quarter time Thornton lead Seville by 15 points.
