THE Merton Skate Park was officially opened last Sunday with an open day for skaters to celebrate and demonstrate their skills.
After lots of hard work to bring the project to fruition from various parties and the community, the day provided an opportunity to celebrate the achievement.
Officials in attendance included Member for Eildon Cindy McLeish, Mansfield Shire Council Deputy Mayor James Tehan, representatives of the other businesses that brought the skate park into existence, and community volunteers that worked on the project.
Catriona and James Wilson, the parents of Mansfield Olympic skateboarder Hayley Wilson, also attended and awarded one lucky young skater with one of Hayley’s professional skateboards.
The Merton Community Skate Park project group successfully applied for funding from Mansfield Shire Council’s 2022-23 Outlying Communities Infrastructure Fund, and the skate park was constructed by Mansfield construction company Tectonic Civil.
The open day was hosted by the Merton Recreation and Memorial Hall Reserves Committee and Mansfield Shire Youth.
Mansfield Shire Mayor Steve Rabie detailed how Mansfield Shire Council was proud to support the community-led initiative to construct the skate park.
“We’re really grateful to our community members who came together to drive the Merton Community Skate Park project,” Mr Rabie said.
