FOUNDATION Murrindindi opened its Murrindindi Community Food Share program on Thursday, May 2.

At the inaugural event, the program distributed 240kg of free food to the local community, and an additional 30kg to community organisations for further distribution.

The Murrindindi Community Food Share program aims to provide essential food supplies to individuals and families in need.

Recognising the growing demand for food security, Foundation Murrindindi has committed to hosting this event on the first Thursday of each month, from 9am to noon from the grey shed at the rear of 88a Grant Street, Alexandra with access via Bayley Street.

The first Murrindindi Community Food Share event was also supported by 100kg of food and essential items donated by local businesses and individuals.

“We were both proud and humbled by the community’s response to our first Community Food Share event,” Executive Officer of Foundation Murrindindi Robyn Hill said.

“Distributing 240 kg of food at our inaugural event, in just three hours, demonstrates both the need for and the support of this initiative.

We are particularly grateful for the 100kg of community donations of food and essential items, which played a crucial role in making this event a success.

It has already become a community response to the growing concern of food insecurity currently being experienced by so many.”

The Murrindindi Community Food Share program is a monthly event that is a collective response to a local issue, supported by Foundation Murrindindi.

Non-perishable food, personal care and some pet food items are purchased by Foundation Murrindindi through Foodbank Victoria.

In addition, donations of non-perishable food within its use by or best before date, personal care items and fresh produce are warmly welcomed.

“We are grateful for the support of local businesses such as Dobson’s Potatoes, and Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, as well as generous members of our community,” Robyn said. “Every little bit helps.”
