Why do doctors just want the fax?

PEOPLE visiting doctors are often asked to fax their information, which seems odd in this day and age. Few people have access to faxes anymore, and there are increasingly few publicly accessible fax machines, so why do doctors keep insisting on it?

Dr Steven Kaye, Deputy Chair of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Expert Committee on Practice Technology and Management agreed that doctors haven’t moved with the times as new communication methods have evolved.

“There’s certainly an enormous level of block. I guess you have to look at this historically and understand where the doctors are coming from. Historically, the fax came on the market and was a wonderful invention. It was really ahead of its time, whenever it came out, in the early 1980s, I guess it was. It really gave the opportunity for concise, accurate information across any distance by telephone. The international telephone regulations….
