Committee of management needed for Murrindindi Scenic Reserve

NEW volunteer committee members are being sought for the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve Committee of Management. A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at the Toolangi DEECA Office at 6pm to elect the new committee for a three-year term.  The reserve was established in 1981, and is located at the northern end of Toolangi State Forest. It comprises 815 hectares of forest along the lower reaches of the Murrindindi River. Features include waterfalls, mountain ash trees, fern gullies and an abundance of native wildlife.

The Committee of Management plays a critical role in managing the area for the benefit of the community and visitors, and planning for future investment. Murrindindi Scenic Reserve is gazetted under Section 50 of the Forest Act. This enables appointment of a Committee of Management to administer the reserve. Committee members help inform management of the reserve.

Committees benefit from a range of perspectives to reflect the interests of the community. Nominations from women, Aboriginal people, people with disabilities, young people, and people from culturally diverse backgrounds are encouraged.

Committee members bring their own experiences and views. Elected members are required to act in accordance with the Victorian Public Sector Code of Conduct.

The committee’s role is to manage, improve and maintain the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve for the purposes for which it is reserved. The reserve was created to conserve the natural beauty of the area, and provide opportunities for recreation.

Committee members are required to commit to attending up to four meetings per year, undertaking any required training, and attending site visits to better understand any issues or opportunities.

Committee members are not required to have direct contact with the public. Its role is associated with decision making. On-ground works are delivered through DEECA staff and contractors.

The chair of the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve is the DEECA District Manager, Lucas Russell.
