THIRTEEN years ago, the Black Saturday bushfires swept through much of Victoria, destroying lives and homes. 173 people died in the fires, 414 people were injured, 2000 homes were lost, around 450,000 hectares of land was burnt, and countless animals died.

It was one of the worst disasters that Victoria has ever experienced.

Our thoughts are with those who lost their lives that day, with the people who loved them, and with all who were affected by the fires. Our thoughts are also with the emergency services personnel who worked so hard in such traumatic and terrifying times to keep us all safe.

Together, we remember.

In the 13 years since the fires, shattered communities have rebuilt and people have been finding a new normal. It’s been a long, hard, difficult road for so many. Recovery can take a long time, and while homes and business may have been rebuilt, pain still lingers.
