UPDATE ON EXPLOSIVE DEVICE FOUND IN ALEXANDRA

Police have advised that the explosive device found near the cenotaph in Alexandra on April 14 was an unsophisticated device, according to experts, and was not professionally made.

It appears to have contained remnants of sparklers and doesn't appear to have been an item of concern.

The community does not need to be alarmed over the incident.

The bomb squad attended and defused the device. As a matter of course, they err on the side of caution.

The item is being investigated by arson and explosive chemists and they will compile a report for local investigators.

Police are seeking witnesses or any information relating to the event. You can contact the Alexandra Police on 5772 1002 or make contact via CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 (this can be done anonymously).
